OUR CULTURE

For some, health is a means to achieving their life’s purpose (i.e., getting from point A to point B). For others, it’s about helping one enjoy life’s pleasures (i.e., smelling the roses). For other’s it’s a reward in and of itself (i.e., just because). But what factors determine our health? The World Health Organization (WHO) states that the determinants of health include:
  • peoples’ individual characteristics and behaviours.
    • Personal behaviour and coping skills
    • Lifestyle (i.e., diet, exercise, substance use)
    •  Education
    • Stress management
    •  Self-confidence
    •  Hygiene
    • Genetics
  • the social and economic environment
    • Income and social status
    • Social support networks
    • Access to healthcare
  • the physical environment
    • Safe water, clean air
    • Healthy workplaces
    • Safe roads
    • Equitable labour laws
By the time a patient comes to the doctor’s office with a complaint, the history of the problem has already been developing for a while.
  • What if we could be more aware of this brewing issue earlier on, and change its course in a way that’s good for us?
  • While many of these determinants of health lie outside our purview, what if we can improve many of those factors?
    • And how do we do that?
This is the topic of Behavioural medicine: the use of behavioural, psychosocial and biomedical science knowledge to better understand how illness develops; and to develop interventions to promote wellness. Our program is about training psychological, physiological and behavioural resilience in helping you in achieving the freedom of engaging in life to the best of your ability.
